July Quilt Installed at Library

The collaborative quilt project between Virginia Public Library and the Going to Pieces Quilt Guild continues in July with a quilt aptly filled with sparkle.  With a surprising color combination of red, purple and silver, “Ladies Choice” was designed and quilted by Karen Lamppa, a long-standing member of 4 regional quilt guilds.

Mrs. Lamppa was raised in a family that valued the art of handwork in the form of knitting, embroidery, sewing, weaving and also quilting.  She believes this is why she was destined to embrace the fiber arts which led to a major in Home Economics.   She became a local celebrity in 2007 when one of her quilts was accepted by the Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky to be displayed in a series called “Stitches from the Upper Midwest”.  This work was one of only 30 selected from entries from 4 States.

Ladies Choice

“Ladies Choice” is the result of a 6 month block of the month challenge for the All Range Quilters project for which the primary requirement was to include an umbrella and a flower.  Karen’s personal challenge was to use fabrics from her stash for her blocks.  It was only after she finished the blocks that she found the perfect fabric for her outer border which highlighted her unusual color choice. 

Nancy Maxwell, Director of Virginia Public Library has been “amazed by the quality of works displayed by our local artists and their dedication to their craft.   This project has been an inspiration for many of our patrons.”

The motto of the Going to Pieces Quilt Guild is “Inspire, Instruct & Improve.”  Area sewers are welcome to attend the monthly meetings of the Guild.  These are held the 3^rd Tuesday of each month from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the basement of the First Covenant Church at 232 5^th St South.  Quilting retreats are sponsored by the guild every Spring and Fall.  For more information, contact Darcy at 750-7035 or Betty at 741-4348.  New members are always welcome!

There is a lot going on in the world and many places to find information about it. Your library is one of those places.

Wall Street Journal

The Virginia Public Library has hard copies of several local, state, and national newspapers.  These range from the Mesabi Daily News to the Wall Street Journal.  We keep back issues of some of our newspapers for up to a year.  If you are looking for an article you saw in the MDN four months ago, give us the date and we'll provide the copy!

If you are looking for news from a particular community in another state, we have America's News, part of the NewsBank databases the library subscribes to.   With your library card, you can use America's News to read newspapers from Bangor, Maine; Fremont, California; and many points in bet

ACRES Magazine

Many people prefer to get their news and entertainment from magazines, rather than newspapers.  Your library has a lot of magazine titles to choose from!   Our print magazines include Bloomberg Business Week, Mayo Clinic Health Letter, The Nation, the UTNE Reader, ACRES, Men's Journal, Midwest Home, The Writer, and many others.

We don't have the magazine you are looking for?  Maybe we do...  The Virginia Public Library and other members of the Arrowhead Library System have subscribed to Zinio--"the World's Largest Newsstand"--in order to provide you access to more than eighty titles!  There are magazines for children, teens, athletes, car repair enthusiasts, and people with other interests.  If Zinio doesn't have it, we can find it in one of many other resources. Zinio will be available beginning July 1st. 

Circulating books, magazines, and newspapers can all be checked out for three weeks.  All you need is your library card!

Summer Reading

The Summer Reading Program here at the Virginia Public Library is well under way with children eagerly visiting the library to borrow more books, participate in Craft-TASTIC Tuesdays, and enjoy interesting programs.  Children aren't the only ones reading, though, and we have some suggestions and tips for finding library items for kids of all ages.

There are many summer-related books in the library.  One way to find them is to look for the word summer using a Subject Keyword search in the library's online catalog.   A few of the  titles from such a search include Beach House Memories, by Mary Alice Monroe;  The Accidental, by Ali Smith; and Summerland, by Elin Hilderbrand

If you prefer non-fiction, you can limit the search by choosing Adult non-fiction in the "Limit by" box.  Some titles from that search include  Blueberry Summers:  Growing Up at the Lake, by Curtiss Anderson; Mary Engelbreit's Summer Craft Book, by Mary Engelbreit; and Resorts of Minnesota:  Exploring the Heritage and History of Minnesota's Family Resorts, by Neil E. For those who like magazines more than books, many of them have seasonal issues.  Some to keep in mind are Lake Superior Magazine, Country Living, and Backwoods Home.  To find these and other magazine titles, you can do a Title Search on the basic search page of our online catalog.

It's that time of year again--Time to get out and vote. To assist you in choosing which candidates and issues to vote for, we have compiled a list of informative websites. These are not the only websites available to you; they are simply a small sampling of what is out there. Be advised that they are not endorsed by the Virginia Public Library and that we have not read everything that is contained within them. You are using them at your own risk. A good source of Presidential election information is NewsBank, a database brought to you by your library.  Simply use your library card to log in and explore the Special Reports column on the left side of the screen. NewsBank For information on Minnesota legislative races, take a look at the Politics in Minnesota website: Politics in Minnesota   The League of Women Voters has put together a website with general election information. It can be searched by state and includes such information as how to register and where to go to vote. Vote 411   You can also learn where you should go to place your vote and how to register to vote at the website of the Minnesota Secretary of State. Additionally, this site has information on what issues and which candidates are to be voted on in your area. Secretary of State   Minnesota Public Radio has a series of questions to help voters see which candidates are more similar to their own beliefs.
